At the end of last month, the Terrace Economic Development Authority attended the Association of Mineral Exploration’s Round Up conference. This conference brings together individuals and organizations representing all components of the global minerals exploration and mine development industries. In 2011, Round Up saw over 7,000 delegates attend, this year in 2012, Round Up had over 8,500 delegates!
The City of Terrace, which is surrounded by mining activity with over a dozen of potential mines in the region (some of the more developed properties can be found on www.investnorthwestbc.ca) stands to gain substantially by this development. Many of our businesses currently service and supply these mines, and as the properties continue to develop, the businesses will have even more opportunity to work on the project.
Throughout the week, Mayor Pernarowski and the Economic Development Officer for TEDA, Evan van Dyk, met with executives from almost all of the mining companies developing properties in Northwest BC and asked how we can support. All the executives were flattered by the request and unanimously all said Terrace is already extremely supportive. One very exciting message received back was when we were told by one company that as they moved towards production, they will support the communities that support them, including procuring services and supplies out of that community.
At Round Up, we also had a booth where we had the opportunity to discuss about the exciting projects in the region and why Terrace is ready to capitalize on this development. Having a booth at Round Up is one of the best ways to develop contacts and generate leads for those considering expanding into new markets. This year was no different; we spoke to hundreds of delegates and generated about five leads on people looking to expand a start a business in Terrace. We have been excitedly working towards helping them take the next step to Terrace.
With Round Up behind us for 2012, we look forward to Minerals North 2012 in Burns Lake and continuing to develop relationships with many new contacts in the mining industry.
