B.C. HYDRO SIGNS NORTHWESTERN POWER DEAL

Comments BC Hydro says it has signed a deal to buy electricity for a proposed run-of-river project which would be built southwest of here.

The deal with Swift Power to buy enough electricity a year to serve 4,600 households is one of 19 announced by the crown corporation today.

Swift Power wants to divert water from the Dasque and Middle Creeks through small powerhouses before returning the water to the creeks.

Swift Power officials in the past have said the attractivness of their project lies in having good spring runoff as well as heavy fall rains.

The creeks are also 19km from B.C. Hydro’s Skeena Substation, meaning that building a connecting line will be less expensive than is the case with other projects.

B.C. Hydro spokesman Dag Sharman did note that the Swift contract and the 18 others must still be reviewed by the B.C. Utilities Commission.

Swift must still secure environmental and other permits before it can start construction.
