GOOD NEWS FOR NORTHWEST AS RED CHRIS MINE
The Terrace Economic Development Authority (TEDA) is pleased with yesterday’s decision by the Supreme Court of Canada to allow the development of Imperial Metals’ Red Chris Mine, located near Iskut, to proceed.
“Red Chris Mine is an exciting project for our region and we look forward to the economic spinoffs Red Chris will provide to the area,” says TEDA’s Chair, Darryl Tucker. “This type of economic development is critical to our region particularly given the difficult economic times in recent years.”
The decision means the world-class gold-copper deposit can now move forward.
The 17, 254 hectare property is located in Tahltan traditional territory, 80 km south of Dease Lake and 18 km southeast of Iskut. The development is expected to have a 25-year mine life, providing jobs and other opportunities in the region.
“TEDA acknowledges the importance of today’s decision in ensuring future mining developments will be subject to a more rigorous environmental review,” states Economic Development Officer Sam Harling. “This ruling means that permitting in the future will become more streamlined while ensuring that environmental concerns are heard,” says Harling.
The Terrace Economic Development Authority is a public-private partnership responsible for promoting the growth and diversification of Terrace’s economy.
TEDA helps develop economic infrastructure, facilitating new investment, and acting as an advocate and advisor to local business.
