THE CITY of Terrace could be seeing some Hockeyville-style rebranding this next year if city councillor and Hockeyville committee member Bruce Martindale has his say.
“We need to keep reminding everybody throughout the year that Terrace is Hockeyville….by putting Hockeyville on absolutely everything we do,” he said during yesterday’s budget meeting that concentrated on the city’s contribution to grants in aid.
He also had no qualms of having the brand as “Kraft Hockeyville” rather than simply “Hockeyville,” explaining that the company has done a lot for the community by creating the competition.
Martindale made the pitch to put municipal money towards changing city representation like the website, letterheads, and logos on the side of city vehicles to promote Terrace as Kraft Hockeyville 2009. He even suggested making a commemorative pin for the occasion, saying that it was important for the city to look at the opportunities the title could give the community.
“There is some cost involved in this,” he acknowledged, but added that he thinks that’s the minimum the city can do – the cost is an investment to the city.
While Martindale did not have a specific dollar amount on the Kraft Hockeyville branding, he said perhaps a sub committee from the city staff could look into how much money the rebranding would cost.
He said the city needs to keep reminding and reinforcing people that Terrace is Kraft Hockeyville, and it will benefit the community for years to come.
Councillor Bruce Bidgood agreed, saying that Terrace is Hockeyville for only one year ad the city might as well get as much as possible while it can.
Mayor Dave Pernarowski said that while he agreed with Martindale about the opportunity Hockeyville could bring the community, numbers needed to be looked at.
“We’re scratching and clawing for everything we can get,” he said of this year’s budget.
The city will see if $5,000 from the Northern Development Initiative (NDI) Trust, earmarked for regional projects, would fit the grant requirements. The city received $35,000 of grant money from NDI this year, which is allotted for various programs like banners, bear lights, bike racks and event programming. The approximate $5,000 remaining in the fund, which needs to be spent by December, is proposed to be spent for Terrace is Kraft Hockeyville 2009 branding.
