TERRACE-BASED Tower Radio Ltd. has once again received recognition through the annual Northern B.C. Business and Technology Awards.
For the second year in a row, company was named Technology Provider of the Year.
Results of the awards, sponsored by groups and organizations dedicated to northern success in technology and business, were announced at a banquet last week in Prince George.
Last year Tower Radio won for its work on implementing satellite internet to remotely located various mining camps.
This year the company won the award for its work on implementing 911 service in the Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine.
The Technology Provider of the Year award is for a company that “has developed or introduced a product or service which furthers business growth in northern British Columbia or which assists individual companies in their own development,” according to award criteria.
Company owner Rob Dykman admitted there were challenges putting up the 911 backup system via satellite, but completion of the program is set for this February.
The 911 service will cover more than 100,000 square kilometres of northwestern B.C.
Tower Radio provides communications equipment for police, government, fire departments, ambulance departments, logging companies, highway and road maintenance, and mining and exploration companies.
Tower Radio has been in business for nearly 10 years and employs 12 full time people.
Tower Radio was the only award recipient from Terrace, although there were seven local nominations for 13 categories.
Overall, 15 of the 39 nominations came from businesses and organizations in the northwest.
The Northwest Science and Innovation Society is the regional sponsor of the annual awards.
Terrace’s Maatje Stamp-Vincent of the 16/37 Community Futures small business mentoring project was a contender for the mentor award, as was the local Northwest Science and Innovation Society.
Graydon Security Systems was nominated for the Workplace Health and Safety Innovation award, Tower Radio for the technology Implementer of the Year award, Northwest Timberlands and Magellan Digital Management for the John Humphreys Memorial Forest Innovator Award, and Northwest Community College (NWCC) for the e-business award.
While the majority of the award winners were based out of Prince George, some award winners were closer to home.
The mentor award was won by NWCC’s school of exploration and mining for its reclamation and prospecting program which is based in Smithers.
The same program also received the sustainability award.
