TOWER RADIO WINS BIG AT NORTHERN TECH AWARDS IN PRINCE GEORGE!

Congratulations to Rob Dykman and his team at Tower Radio Ltd. of Terrace, the winner of two awards at the Northern Business and Technology Awards held in Prince George last night! Tower Radio was the recipient of both the Technology Provider of the Year Award and the Technology Implementer of the Year Award.

This is a major accomplishment for a Terrace-based company as these awards have been traditionally dominated by Prince George companies. The Northwest Science and Innovation Society is proud to have nominated Tower Radio for these awards. Tower Radio was also the winner of the inaugural Technology Innovator Award at the recent Terrace & District Chamber of Commerce’s Business Excellence Awards held this past November.
Tower Radio, purchased by Rob Dykman in 1999, has gained a solid reputation in providing wireless communications, including voice and data communications, to a variety of northern concerns, be it remote native communities or mining camps located in mountainous regions of Northern BC.
Tower Radio developed a unique communications solution that enables mining companies located in the remote and mountainous regions of BC to communicate between base camps, air strips and head offices. Tower Radio developed a satellite repeater that is located on a mountain top ridge, operates on solar power and transmits internet and email service in real time to the base camp up to 30 kilometres away. This repeater solution allows camps to be located in practically any location within the valley below. Tower Radio had recently been awarded the contract as the sole communications provider for the Nova Gold Galore Creek project, providing voice and data communications for hundreds of users along the 135 kilometre roadway. This is accomplished using several aluminum repeater housings they have developed. They are solar powered, easy to set up, and an environmentally viable solution to other repeater structures. Other similar systems can take up to five helicopter trips to transport to the site and days to put together; Tower Radio’s system can be brought up in a single trip and is up and running in about 2 hours. These same satellite repeater systems can be used not only in the mining industry, but also in other natural resource industries that are located in geographically challenging environments.

The Northern Business and Technology Award recipients of the awards must be a role model for other entrepreneurs, business and organizations and have demonstrated leadership in their field. Tower Radio has clearly demonstrated that they are well deserving of these awards. The Technology Provider of the Year Award is for a company that “has developed or introduced a product or service which furthers business growth in northern BC or which assists individual companies in their own development”, and the Technology Implementer of the Year Award is for a company “that has demonstrated excellence through superior implementation of a technology tool or through an innovative approach to the use of technology in their business”.
